A bill making its way through the Minnesota legislature would exempt Minnesota’s rural electric cooperatives from regulatory oversight, allowing them to put high fees on members taking advantage of net metering. Some of these fees are as high as $83 a month, which would effectively end local energy projects in rural Minnesota. While the co-ops maintain that these fees are a local energy projects increase their grid upkeep cost, opponents say that these fees will make paying off a local energy project impossible.
